How to become a Registered Childcarer or Child-minder

Become a Registered Child minder (2)

Further points

The Children Act requires by law that those that receive payment to care for a child under eight for more than two hours per day is registered. Any registered carer is subject to the national standards that apply. These standards are inspected by Ofsted, a government inspection office. Approval of suitable persons to look after children covers 14 standards and include police checks, suitability of premises and the developmental well-being of the child. If these elements are met, then the carer may claim grants .Things differ slightly if the carer is a relation. The List of Standards can be downloaded from Ofsted.

Updates to these Standards can be found at:

http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/publications/index.cfm?fuseaction=pubs.summary&id=3381

The updates contain important changes to registration criteria and amendments to the Standards.*

There are eight regional Ofsted offices spread around the country with single contact telephone number, (0845 601 4771 ) Advice can be sought from them or you may seek more localised advice from your Early Years Development & Childcare Partnership, Children's Information Service. (EYDCP)

Your initial request should be to your local authority. They should provide a clear informative path towards registration and the nature of qualification required. Courses for initial training would normally be a prerequisite to registration and should be available either at a local college or distance learning scheme.

Charges for day care vary from region to region and are affected by supply and demand. It is therefore difficult to provide accurate guidance. Advice about such detail should be more accurately obtained from EYDCP.

The National Minimum Wage does not apply to those who are self-employed.
